The photo hide in Gambia is a heartfelt initiative by Dutch nature photographer Han Bouwmeester.

After successfully developing several professional photo hides in Europe, this unique location was created in West Africa — combining exceptional wildlife photography with direct support for the local community.

A Paradise for Bird Photographers

Gambia is considered one of the richest birding destinations in West Africa. The hide is built according to a proven European concept:

  • Spacious and solid construction
  • Water pool directly in front of the hide
  • Eye-level photography
  • Natural perches and clean backgrounds
  • Capacity for up to 4 photographers

During the dry season especially, the water source becomes a magnet for numerous bird species. This provides outstanding close-range photography opportunities in beautiful natural light.

Please note: The hide is functional and robust. Due to climate conditions (heat, termites, weather), it is not designed to European luxury standards — but offers an authentic African nature experience.

Sustainable & Community-Focused

The hide is managed by Yankuba Tamba, one of Gambia’s most respected bird guides.

He provides:

  • Transfers to and from the hide
  • Full-day guidance if desired
  • Tailored birding excursions
  • Local expertise and support

All proceeds go directly to his family, helping to cover living expenses, healthcare, and education.

Thanks to visiting photographers, a community water well has also been installed — benefiting nearby villagers.

Rates & Booking

  • €35 per day
  • €10 per additional photographer
