HBN Hide 1XL

HBN-1XL;  the next level…

Blood, sweat and tears; those are the things that I will always remember about the construction of this photo hide. The location is as unique as it is complex, and that has had its consequences. We have worked on the construction of the hide for no less than half a year.

The hide’s name has been chosen because it was the replacement of HBN-1; the very first rentable photo hide in the Netherlands and Belgium. It was in need of replacement but we opted for a totally different place, in the same area though.

HBN-1XL is located in a rugged semi-open area with behind the hide a rugged forest, typical for the Province of Twente. The rugged terrain consists of a mixed vegetation of reeds and other wild flora and the pond has been constructed in a way that the background reflects in the water and it will turn your photos into a perfect fit. We try to keep the setting of this hide as natural and as ‘wild’ as possible. In addition to close-ups, photographing birds and squirrels in a beautiful environment has become possible too. The vegetation will be different every time you visit and therefore, so will be your results.

In addition to the common forest birds, we will expect to see species like woodcocks, green woodpeckers, reed buntings, and kingfishers, but undoubtedly, there will also be deer to be photographed.  Although the first months have been a true kingfisher feast, as a couple decided to breed very near the hide, I would absolutely not call this hide a specific kingfisher hide.   The first months also proved that very big surprises can occur as we had three very rare and foreign to the Netherlands species visiting the hide; corncrake, Cetti’s warbler, and grey shrike. A hide with mostly the standard forest types but with a chance for surprises!

Near this hide a bird research area is located, so it’s possible that some of the birds are ringed. In some time of the year more than in others, but it will especially be the case with coal- and blue tits and wood nuthatches. We especially see these kinds as an important means to attract other species. The existence of this unique photo hide is partly due to our cooperation with this bird working group.

Mirror glass

At the photo hide we make use of hi-tech mirror glass, which increases the chance of spotting the more shy species. We have only fitted it in the hides in which it delivers added value, and particularly, where we can apply it in a for birds safe way.

As we try to offer something different at each photo hide, for this location, we have chosen a very large pond with a small island on both sides. The background will partly consist of water that will reflect the plants surrounding the water bowl.  The islands are located at 4 and 6 meters of your lens. Of course, you can photograph from other places, both closer or further away.
